We’re getting closer and closer to the release of Fantastic Four: First Steps, which means, of course, aside from an eventual movie we’re about to get oodles of Fantastic Four merchandise. Lego is no stranger to the movie marketing mayhem, as usual, so it’s only fitting that we’ve already got a First Steps set that’s mostly a doozy. Mostly.
This morning Lego revealed its first Marvel Superheroes set, Fantastic Four vs. Galactus. It’s technically our first proper look at the big G’s movie design, considering we’ve mostly seen tiny glimpses of parts of him in the trailers so far, but considering that he a) largely just looks like Galactus from the comics, and b), is made out of Lego, so what you can really discern of any changes the MCU has made to the devourer of worlds is difficult.
The simple set, clocking in at 427 pieces, lets you build up a 28cm tall Galactus, and of course gives you each member of the Fantastic Four to do battle with him. Johnny Storm includes flame effects to put on his feet and hands (and a small support stand so he can fly around Galactus being an annoyance), Sue has little invisibility field effects, and then… well, Ben and Reed get the short end of the Lego stick.

Ben’s clobbering hands and rocky minifigure head are necessary sacrifices to make a Thing minifigure over the beefy mold Lego usually reserves for larger characters like the Hulk, but it does make him look a bit less burly next to his fellow FF teammates. But Reed’s elongated leg pieces make him look a little less Mr. Fantastic, and a little more Stilt Man. Outside of making unique pieces though, there’s probably not much else Lego could’ve done to make extending parts for Reed’s powers but surely there could’ve been ways to build legs that weren’t so rigid?
Still, at least the minifigures sans-power-parts look pretty nifty. And Galactus himself looks great. But is he $70 great? You’ll be able to find out when the set releases on June 1.
