Creating and Hosting a Website with DreamHost: Our Experience

We will start our DreamHost review for 2025 by evaluating the onboarding process to create and host a site from scratch.

After signing up for the Shared Unlimited plan (which is a great shared hosting plan), we accessed the DreamHost control panel to kickstart our website setup. The process began with adding a domain to our hosting plan, where we opted for a temporary subdomain to get started quickly.

Using the intuitive DreamHost control panel, we clicked on “set up a website” to start the website setup process.

To install WordPress, we used the Liftoff website builder, which allowed us to create a website in less than 60 seconds with AI. If you prefer to set up an online store, you can select the box to add a shopping cart to your site with Ecwid’s user-friendly ecommerce platform. We clicked on “Confirm install” and patiently waited for about 10 minutes for the installation to finish.

Next, we clicked on “Get started” to launch the website setup using the Liftoff website builder. The initial prompt asked us to specify the purpose of our website. We entered “blog website” in the search bar, which displayed a dropdown menu, and selected “personal website” from the options. You will also be able to enter your website or brand name as well during the setup. We chose “Gizmodo Test” for this to test run the website later in this DreamHost review.

The onboarding process continued with the setup prompting us to choose between a single or multi page website. We settled for the single-page website and clicked Next.

Another prompt we encountered in our DreamHost review to set up our WordPress website was to choose the goal of our website. We ticked “publish a blog” and “grow site traffic” from the options available since we are only after creating a simple website for now.

Next, a series of basic design templates were generated using the site name we had chosen earlier in the setup. The additional content on the site was random and not particularly useful, but you can easily customize it later to suit your needs.

However, the next setup will allow you to use the DreamHost AI assistant to create a customized copy and set the tone for your site. We clicked on “Next” and the setup wizard installed the necessary plugins and added new content to complete the process.

Overall, the DreamHost’s Liftoff website builder is particularly beneficial for small business owners and individuals seeking a quick and efficient way to establish an online presence without extensive technical expertise.

We like that it allowed us to use the WordPress editor to personalize and further customize the generated design with relevant content and images.

DreamHost Control Panel: Simplicity and user-friendliness compared to cPanel

Another aspect we examined in the DreamHost review is the custom control panel.

Although the DreamHost control panel is filled up with upsells and add-ons, the left side panel offers access to the major tools. DreamHost’s custom control panel is designed with simplicity in mind, making it incredibly user-friendly.

Visit DreamHost

From managing your domains and hosting add-ons to installing WordPress and managing your hosting account, everything is streamlined for convenience. The panel also offers access to support services, AI business advisor and quick email setup. These tools are all accessible with just a few clicks.

Dreamhosting Cpanel

Another standout feature is the option to hire a professional to design your website, offering a quick solution to the challenges of creating a unique template that aligns with your site idea. These services are designed to provide comprehensive support for website development and digital marketing.

However, it’s important to note that these offerings come at a premium price point. As such, it’s advisable to evaluate your specific needs and budget to determine whether these services align with your objectives.

On the other hand, the simplicity of DreamHost’s control panel has its limitations. Unlike advanced panels such as cPanel, installing CMS platforms or scripts beyond WordPress can be challenging, which restricts your ability to explore more complex site-building options. While the control panel works well for WordPress-focused users, it may not meet the needs of those seeking broader customization capabilities.

Performance and Reliability Tests for DreamHost

During our DreamHost review for 2025, we evaluated the speed and performance of their servers. Does it rank among the fastest web hosting providers?

Website speed is a critical factor in the success of any online business, and DreamHost excels at delivering solid performance. With its global data centers, DreamHost ensures that your site is hosted closer to your audience, significantly reducing latency and enhancing loading speeds. Built-in caching and SSD storage further boost performance, enabling faster page loading times, which delight both users and search engines while driving better SEO rankings and visitor retention.

As part of our review, we tested server speed and uptime using GTmetrix and Pingdom—two of the most reliable tools for performance evaluation. The results showcased DreamHost’s ability to reduce bounce rates and maintain high engagement levels thanks to its optimized infrastructure.

If speed, reliability, and SEO impact are essential to your website’s success, DreamHost stands out as a strong contender in the hosting market. Keep reading to discover the detailed results of our tests.

DreamHost Speed Test – GTmetrix

GTmetrix is a powerful tool for analyzing and improving website performance. It evaluates your web pages against Google’s Core Web Vitals, providing grades based on metrics like Time to First Byte (TTFB), First Contentful Paint (FCP), and Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) to ensure fast loading speeds.

Additionally, GTmetrix measures user interaction through metrics like First Input Delay (FID) and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS), offering actionable insights to optimize stability, speed, and overall user experience.

Here is a breakdown of the metrics GTmetrix uses:

  • GTmetrix Grade: Evaluates overall page performance and structure, focusing on speed and SEO optimization.
  • Time to First Byte (TTFB): Measures server response time; ideal is under 0.8 seconds.
  • First Contentful Paint (FCP): Tracks how quickly the first visible element appears; ideal is under 1.8 seconds.
  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): Assesses the time for the largest visible item to load; benchmark is under 2.5 seconds.
  • First Input Delay (FID): Gauges how fast pages respond to user interactions; ideal is under 300 milliseconds.
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): Measures visual stability during page interactions; an ideal score is 0.1 or less.

First GTmetrix Test

We began our GTmetrix speed test for the DreamHost review with a basic WordPress installation.

Using an AI-generated template provided by the Liftoff website builder, we published the site without making any additional configurations. Additionally, we left the pre-installed WP Super Cache plugin untouched, without further customization.

Dreamhost First Gtmetrix Test
© GTmetrix

During the GTmetrix analysis, we recorded a TTFB of 221 ms, which is a solid performance. It demonstrates that DreamHost’s server can respond quickly to browser queries, ensuring fast-loading pages and improved SEO rankings.

We observed FCP and LCP times of 489 ms and 587 ms, respectively, showcasing the effectiveness of DreamHost’s SSD storage technology in delivering impressive speed and performance.

Additionally, the CLS was measured at 0.03, which is excellent and well below the 0.1 benchmark, indicating great stability for user interactions.

The fully loaded time stood at 666 ms, which is at least faster than what we recorded during a similar test in our Hostinger review, reaffirming that DreamHost’s optimized servers are capable of handling websites that require quick loading speeds for both user satisfaction and SEO success.

Overall, the test yielded 100% scores for performance and 98% for structure, earning a GTmetrix grade of A. This result underscores DreamHost’s ability to create fast, SEO-friendly websites that exceed Google’s ideal performance standards.

Here is a summary of DreamHost’s first GTmetrix speed test:

  • Time to First Byte (TTFB): 221 ms (579 ms faster)
  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): 587 ms (almost 2s faster)
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): 0.03 (0.07 faster)
  • Fully loaded time: 666 ms (fast!)

GTmetrix Second Test Results

For our second GTmetrix speed test with DreamHost, we explored how the performance would hold up with a more customized, functional site.

To achieve this, we installed the Neve theme and applied one of its starter personal website templates, complete with content. We then removed the AI-generated template used in the first test but left the pre-installed WP Super Cache plugin to maintain consistency.

This setup allowed us to assess DreamHost’s server performance under real-world conditions with a more realistic website structure.

Dreamhost Second Gtmetrix Test
© GTmetrix

Our TTFB for this round was 191 ms which is a bit faster than the 199ms from the first test. It also showcased excellent server response times and staying within acceptable range for fast-loading sites. This highlights DreamHost’s capability to support websites that aim for top-tier SEO performance.

The FCP and LCP clocked in at 592 ms and 639 ms, respectively. While these metrics show a slight adjustment from the earlier test, they still reflect DreamHost’s robust SSD storage delivering data at impressive speeds.

The variance can be attributed to the changes made during the setup, but these results are a bit higher than what we’ve seen with SiteGround and Hostinger.

Additionally, we achieved a CLS of 0.05, which is well within the acceptable range. This demonstrates that the server’s optimization technology and caching plugin effectively maintained code stability, ensuring an excellent user experience with minimal layout shifts.

DreamHost continued to impress with a fully loaded time of 639 ms, reflecting a speedy and highly optimized setup capable of boosting both traffic and SEO rankings.

With performance and structure scores of 99% and 97%, earning a GTmetrix grade of A, this test reaffirms that DreamHost delivers exceptional performance for fully functional websites.

Here’s a summary of DreamHost’s second GTmetrix speed test:

  • Time to First Byte (TTFB): 191 ms (over 600 ms faster than average)
  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): 592 ms (nearly 2 seconds faster)
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): 0.05 (excellent stability)
  • Fully loaded time: 639 ms (impressively fast!)

DreamHost Uptime Test – Pingdom

The next tool we used to evaluate speed and uptime during our DreamHost review was Pingdom.

Dreamhost Uptime And Response Test
© Pingdom

Our findings showed that our DreamHost test website had 100% uptime in the last 24 hours, which is pretty impressive. Therefore, according to this DreamHost review, their servers have impeccable uptime, and you can rest assured that your websites will not unnecessarily have downtime.

At the same time, we also observed an average response time of 627ms, aligning closely with the results recorded using GTmetrix earlier in this DreamHost review.

Performance Technologies: Our Analysis

Before concluding and giving our final opinion on DreamHost, we’ll take some time to discuss some of the technologies and features offered by the web host.

Web Server Software: Apache vs. Nginx

DreamHost offers two types of web server software: Apache and Nginx. Apache, though capable of managing low-traffic websites effectively, struggles under high-traffic demands, which can lead to performance issues during surges.

In contrast, Nginx servers, known for their speed and efficiency, excel in handling medium to high-traffic websites without compromising performance. If your site experiences frequent traffic spikes, opting for an Nginx server is a smarter choice.

Shared plans typically use Apache servers, while DreamPress packages employ Nginx. For VPS and dedicated plans, DreamHost allows you to select your preferred server upon purchase, ensuring flexibility based on your specific needs.

Try DreamHost risk-free

SSD Storage and RAID 1 Configuration

DreamHost employs fast SSD storage on all its servers, significantly improving website loading speeds.

SSDs use fewer resources compared to traditional HDDs, reducing FCP and LCP times, which boosts SEO performance and enhances user experience. Additionally, DreamHost’s RAID 1 configuration ensures data redundancy by mirroring your files on a backup disk.

This setup minimizes downtime in case of storage failures, keeping your website accessible and maintaining its performance.

Caching, OPcache, and CDN for Superior Performance

DreamHost’s in-house caching saves instances of your web pages, delivering them faster to visitors and reducing load times. OPcache optimizes PHP execution, ensuring lightning-fast performance for PHP-based applications.

Additionally, DreamHost leverages CDN technology to store your site’s content across multiple servers globally, serving web pages from the data center closest to the visitor.

This reduces latency, improves site speed, and enhances user engagement, potentially leading to better rankings on Google.

Free Unlimited Site Migrations: A Beginner-Friendly Advantage

One standout feature of DreamHost is its free unlimited site migrations. The process is simple, thanks to a beginner-friendly WordPress plugin.

By generating a token from your DreamHost control panel, you can easily transfer your site with no downtime. Unlike competitors like Bluehost or A2 Hosting, which charge for migrations after the first free transfer, DreamHost allows unlimited migrations at no cost, offering significant value.

Money-Back Guarantee: Up to 97 Days of Assurance

DreamHost offers industry-leading refund policies with both a 97-day and 30-day money-back guarantee.

The 97-day guarantee applies exclusively to Shared Hosting plans, allowing users to claim a full refund if dissatisfied within the first three months. For all other plans, a 30-day money-back guarantee ensures a risk-free trial.

However, refunds apply only to credit card payments, and domains or third-party services are excluded. This policy reflects DreamHost’s confidence in its hosting services while providing peace of mind to new customers.

Room for Improvement: Security Features

Despite its strong performance technologies, DreamHost’s security features fall short. Basic plans lack comprehensive protection, offering only SSL certificates, SSH access, and automated backups.

Advanced security options like anti-DDoS protection and malware scanning are either limited to higher-tier plans or require purchasing the DreamShield Protection add-on for $3 per month.

When compared to competitors like Hostinger and SiteGround, which include robust security suites across all plans, DreamHost has significant room for improvement in this area.

By balancing its strengths in performance and affordability with some noted security limitations, DreamHost remains a competitive option, particularly for users focused on speed and site migration. However, if top-tier security is a priority, you may want to check out our list of the most secure web hosts.

Conclusion: Do We Recommend DreamHost?

DreamHost is a reliable choice if you’re looking to host a WordPress site, are a small business owner, or need an affordable hosting option with great performance. Its shared and managed WordPress plans deliver excellent speed, scalability, and ease of use, making it perfect for personal blogs, startups, and medium-sized businesses.

Budget-conscious users will appreciate its straightforward pricing, free unlimited site migrations, and generous money-back guarantees.

However, DreamHost falls short in terms of comprehensive security features and global server coverage, making it less suitable for large enterprises with demanding security or international needs.

If your focus is on affordability, WordPress optimization, or beginner-friendly tools, DreamHost offers great value. For more advanced requirements, you may want to consider alternatives. Ultimately, choose DreamHost if you need a balance of performance, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness for your hosting needs.
